Until early 2010, construction is taking place on DLR to allow us to meet passenger growth by adding an extra carriage to your train.
With passenger numbers expected to rise from 62 in 2007 to 80 million a year by 2010, a strategy was needed to increase capacity to meet this growth. A solution was identified to increase trains from their current two carriages to three carriages, increasing capacity by up to 50 per cent on the busiest routes.
To enable three carriage trains to operate, work includes:
- Extending station platforms to accommodate longer trains.
- Remodelling Tower Gateway station.
- A new station east of the existing South Quay station.
- Strengthening of viaducts to carry an additional carriage.
- Construction of two new railway junctions adjacent to Poplar and Canning Town stations to improve train reliability and frequency at these busy locations.
This work may cause disruption to services and those living around the work sites. However, working with our construction partner Taylor Woodrow, we will always aim to limit inconvenience to a minimum.
